With Wanganui football's glamour teams away from Wembley Park today, the local league continues on the fields with plenty of matches to entertain.

In the 12.30pm round, St John Castlecliff 1sts will be looking for another three points over last week's narrow losers, the Wanganui High School Athletic Internationals.

The Marist Bhoys face a strong Wanganui Athletic Reserves team and will be hoping that last week's 6-goal glutton Jordan Mcdonald can fight off the nosebleeds commonly associated with defenders who find themselves in the opposition goal-box and hit the net again today.

My match of the day is between Castlecliff St Anthony's and the Wanganui City Reserves.

The Saints are proving to be real contenders this year and are starting to collect points, but they face a team that has been scoring goals for fun and are yet to show their true potential.

This should be a tense match, and will test the resolve of both teams.

The Women's Senior Knockout Cup is being contested today as the Wanganui City Women and the Castlecliff Scrappers fight it out on field No7 for a spot in the final and a chance to lift the cup.

The final round at 2.30pm sees a bitter inter-club derby between the Castlecliff Braves and Castlecliff United.

While there isn't a trophy on the line here, bragging rights are, so I expect this to be a hard fought battle.

Marist Celtic will be looking to claim three points against a wounded Athletic Weekenders, while an injury-ridden Marist Casuals square off against Wanganui Athletic Cosmos, in what could be an entertaining match.

All in all, a great weekend of football is ahead. So get over to Wembley, and support your local footballers. And make the most of that sleep-in too, as junior football kicks off next weekend.
