The curtain comes down on the 2011 football season at Wembley Park today with the Charity Cup, Plate and Senior Women's Cup finals.

The Western Premiership - and Charity Cup - rivalry between Wanganui City and Wanganui Athletic will write another chapter with this afternoon's final (2.30pm kickoff).

Both teams have players capable of turning a game in their favour, and both should be a full strength for the derby showdown.

Athletic proved their worth by easing past City's Development side 4-0 in last week's semifinal. The benefit of having playmaker Collie Siew back, keeper Hayden Englefield in good form and shots finding their targets will give them added confidence.

Though they lost to City in pool play, Athletic looked sharper and hungrier in the second half, in which they came out on top.

Steven Burney has proved that he has to be watched closely and Kelvin Hove was in cracking form last week, while the Czerwonka brothers, Peter and Tim, will be happier after bagging goals against City Development.

Though they have been unbeaten in the Charity Cup, City have been - by their own standards - guilty of scruffiness in front of goal.

The cup-holders will welcome back captain Zane Robinson after a week off watching the Rugby World Cup and he should provide some direction for the team which beat Athletic Cosmos in the semifinal last week but did not make best use of an abundance of possession.

Striker Anthony Bell has been a regular scorer of late- as has Jordan Hodgkinson - while youngster Kyle Graham-Luke was unlucky last week not to get on the scoresheet. Joshua Annabell will again be central to the defensive effort.

The Charity Plate final at 12.30pm sees Castlecliff United take on unbeaten City Hammers - and a new name will be on the trophy by the end of the day as last season's winners, Athletic Cosmos, moved up to the higher ranked Charity Cup this term.

The trophy was donated by the Ross family and one of their number, Ian Ross, will be back from injury and playing in defence for a Hammers team who will want to get some reward from a season when they fell at the last hurdle in the title race.

Castlecliff will look to Leighton Petersen, Paul Ede and Shi Ross-Spooner to cause problems for the Hammers' defence, with midfielders Phil Pratt and stalwart Graeme Hall hoping to control the game.

Hammers' strike force has scored plenty of goals, with Jason Pentecost, Daniel Aplin and Michael Fold the danger men. Midfielder Mark Gorman is a threat from dead-ball situations and Cameron Anderson is sprightly in defence.

The women's senior cup will kick off at 12.30pm as a curtain-raiser for the Charity Cup final and features Athletic and Castlecliff United, two teams who were in the hunt for the league title for a long time before Collegiate wrapped it up.

A win for holders Athletic would be consolation for relinquishing the league title to Collegiate and they will start favourites having beaten Castlecliff convincingly in both league encounters this season.

It should be an entertaining afternoon's soccer with 15 minutes each way extra time and then penalty shoot-outs if scores are level after 90 minutes.
