The concept of a shared water sports centre has become the focus of a working group set up in light of the June floods.

As a result of the floods much of the community has had to pull together to help each other overcome the significant issues groups and individuals have faced. Wanganui District Council, Sport Whanganui and a number of groups associated with the water sports community have been working together to discuss the future of water sports in the city.

An initial meeting was held in September, in which representatives from the water sports community were invited to share their flood-related challenges and discuss their visions for the future.

A working group was then formed by those interested in investigating possible future solutions to address some of the issues and challenges highlighted. The working group has focused on the concept of a shared water sports centre with possible benefits for the water sports community of such a facility being:

-Reduced running costs for clubs through use of a shared venue.

-A larger member/volunteer base enabling clubs to better retain intellectual wisdom if people leave, as well as collective and enhanced knowledge.

-Ability to future-proof (including flood-proofing).

-Opportunity for an energy-efficient/eco-friendly building.

-People power - shared resources, expertise and cost structure.

-Opportunity to further value our river and improve access for all.

The group also highlights the following potential benefits for the wider community:

-Increased tourism opportunities to promote the city through water sports.

-Improved high performance centre attracting top coaches and athletes to the city.

-State-of-the-art venue for potential training camps and visiting groups/events.

-Opportunity for tertiary providers to link to facility and high performance opportunities (significant growth potential).

-Employment opportunities at the centre.

-Growth opportunity potential attracting people to the city (eg, businesses such as cafes, health and fitness services, etc.)

-Opportunity to attract spin-off industries/organisations to the city (eg, boatbuilders).

-Potential to link the Mountains to Sea and Urban Cycle Trail with a facility such as this could provide a real point of difference for the city.

-Opportunity for a regional training academy.

The group envisages a shared water sports centre as a positive community project that will create a sense of community pride around our awa and the heart of this beautiful city.

The key to further progressing the concept relies on the outcome of significant community consultation.
