After 125 matches, more than 270 sets, and nearly 2000 games, the first winners of the Slazenger Wanganui Junior Open were found at the Basset St courts yesterday.

Combining the singles and doubles draws, there were 236 entries for the Boys and Girls 10-year-old and 14-year divisions of the Open, with the favourites from outside the region to the fore.

As expected, top seed Kurt Amey (Feilding) progressed to the Boys' 14-years final with second seed Caleb Fleming (Taranaki), winning 6-2 6-3.

Amey then teamed up with Wellington's Patrick Joss to win the Doubles crown, 7-6 6-3, against Hutt Valley's Trent Young and Jin Dassanayake.

Earlier, Amey and Joss had fought out an epic singles semifinal, with Amey saving match point six times before winning 5-7 7-6 10-8 on super tiebreak.

Wanganui's Jaiden Edmonds was best of the locals, making the Boys' 14 consolation semifinals.

The Boys' 10-years final was won by Hutt Valley's Nick Renton, 4-2 4-0 over Wellington's Tom Bevan, while the Girls' final was another thriller with Wellington's Alice Bolton beating Taranaki's Alexandra Macesic 4-5 5-4 10-5.

In Girls' 14-years, Wellington's Ivy McLean also won both crowns.
