Wembley Park will be heaving at the seams today with every premier team playing at home.

Evolution Painting & Decorating Wanganui City host the Feilding 1sts in the Lotto Federation League at 2.30pm, while a scintillating local derby match between Devon Homes Wanganui Athletic and the Wanganui City Reserves will serve as the curtain raiser at 12.30pm.

The Wanganui City Renovators move to the side fields at Wembley at 12.30pm when they take on the Palmerston North Marist Thirds in their quest for redemption in the Western Premiership.

It's one thing to watch a nation play another nation, or a town or region go to battle with another on the sports field, but nothing quite compares to a local derby.

These are matches where the town is divided in two, colours nailed to the post, and usual friends become bitter enemies, for nothing more than the pride of the club you play for.

For decades, Wanganui City and Wanganui Athletic have gone toe to toe in some epic battles on Wembley's main field for the right to claim superiority on the pitch over their neighbours.

It may just be a small tin fence that separates the two clubs, but when the whistle sounds, it might as well be the Berlin wall, such is the pride, passion and animosity that goes into the 90-minute battle.

Today will be no different as the Western Premiership draws spectators with the penultimate instalment of this heartfelt matchup, as the high-flying Wanganui Athletic, who have been mounting a valiant charge on the top of the table, face off against the blue-collar battlers from the City Reserves. On paper, and based on current form, this should be a one-sided match with Athletic comfortably walking away with the victory.

But form stands for nothing in a derby and it could be that the passion, drawn up from the deep by the Reserves may explode into a match-winning performance, where the underdogs once again come out on top.

Today's result will come down to composure and players sticking to the game plan.

Whichever team can assert their dominance on the match, and set the tone and pace will be the one to walk away victorious.

The Reserves' job will not be made easy though, as they need to quickly find the answer to Athletic's Himalayan hitman, Hishi Lama, who has been rampant in front of goal as well as proving to be a critical cog in the side's midfield.

If the Reserves are able to shut him down early, they may be able to disrupt the Reds' play, and gain a foothold into the match.

I'm not willing to make a pick for this match, as it could easily swing either way, so I'll just look forward to the spectacle on offer.

With such an intense match opening the day at Wembley, the Wanganui City 1sts will also have a chance to put on a show when they host the Feilding 1sts at 2.30pm.

City coach Kelvin Francis may well still be hearing the echoes of the songs emanating from Feilding's changing rooms after his side's defeat in the first round of the competition at Timona Park.

He will have been working his team hard to ensure that Feilding's historic victory will be their last reason to celebrate against City for a long time.

Under normal circumstances, this would have been the last game of the Federation League for City, but after several weeks off, City still have four games to play because of postponements during the season.

And with three weekends off, the boys in gold will be champing at the bit to get on the park again, and put the ball towards the back of the net. City still sit mid-table, so some strong results in their next few games are crucial if they are to move towards their targeted top-four finish.

Feilding have lost all four matches since the last time the two teams met, including a mammoth 10-1 dismantling at the hands of Team Taranaki a couple of rounds ago, and have conceded an average of four goals per game this season.

City should be well-drilled and full of energy with nothing to do but train recently, and will certainly give Feilding a game to remember.

I'm picking the visitors to be on the receiving end of a lot of pent up frustration today, and this match could easily blow out to a big scoreline, gifting three points to City.

Banished to the side fields with the No 1 ground fully occupied and the reserve field still worse for wear after the recent weather, City Renovators host the Palmerston North Marist 3rds at 12.30pm on field No7.

The Renovators dug deep last weekend to grab a solid 3-1 victory over Linton, breaking a poor run of results for the development team, and refuelling their self-belief.

They will be without a couple of first team players who stepped in for game time last weekend, however, hopefully the lasting mark of experience will remain with Tex von Kwiatowski's lads when they face Marist today.

Early in the season, the Marist 3rds were languishing near the bottom of the table, appearing to be making up numbers, yet a string of fine performances, and victories on the trot has touted them as a not-so-easy-beat side today.

The return of Tesco Grunwald to the City team will add some extra depth in areas that may have been a little thin, yet it will still be down to the entire squad to pull together and play the 90 minutes for each other, building on last weekend's spirited performance.

I'm picking this to be close, and would not be surprised to see a draw.
