The Watsons Wanganui Under 15 boys cricket team began their 2015 season with an emphatic eight-wicket victory over Wairarapa in a 50 over game at Victoria Park's Tasman Tanning No 2 pitch on Sunday.
Losing the toss and being asked to bowl, Wanganui's attack kept it tight and captain BenKelt tried attacking fields which prevented the visitors getting any major momentum, while the fielding was very good. Wickets fell steadily and Wairarapa were dismissed for 114 in the 47th over. The bowling unit all did well as Kashish Naihria got three wickets while Beau Hourigan, Henry Kilmister and Harry Cave each got two and Hadleigh O'Leary got the other wicket. Wanganui's opening batsman made a solid start before Sam Sherriff played the ball on, and when Cave was dismissed for a well-compiled 38, Wanganui were 82-2 after 15 overs. Tom Dickson (23no) and Kelt (11no) wrapped up the game in the 23rd over. The comfortable win is an encouraging start to the summer, but Wanganui will still focus on their team "work-ons" for the Central Districts tournament in Levin, December 14-17.
