Four young Wanganui Motorcycle Club riders returned from the South Island Mini MX Festival hosted by the Christchurch Off Road MC Club at West Melton in Canterbury last month with something to brag about.
Jet Ashworth, 9, is from Kai Iwi, brothers Davi, 11, and Ajay Jordan, 9, are fromHawera and Nikk Rangi hails from New Plymouth, but all four belong to the Whanganui club and did the city proud as the only North Islanders competing at the southern championship.
Davi Jordan won the overall title, just a month after claiming the Southland championship in Invercargill.
Younger brother Ajay finished fifth overall in Canterbury, while Rangi was eighth. Ashworth was 10th overall, but had genuine excuses for not finishing further up the South Island ladder after crashing heavily twice on day two of competition.
The Kai Iwi youngster qualified seventh fastest on day one and was seventh in race one. He bettered that to finish fourth in race two and then sixth in the third and final race to end day one in fifth overall.
Minder of all four riders and father of Jet, Darren Ashworth said his son qualified fourth fastest on day two, but two heavy crashes virtually ended his chances of finishing further up the ladder than 10 overall for the festival.
"In one of the crashes he was pinned under his bike for quite a while, but he got up, remounted and finished the race in sixth from dead last."
Ashworth snr has carved out a practice track at home in Kai Iwi and all four have trained on the circuit.
