MARK down the next two Fridays as evenings not to be missed at the Hatrick Raceway.

The cream of the New Zealand greyhounds crop will converge on Wanganui to contest heats for two Group races next Friday, in what will be an action-packed start to the new racing season.

Heats for the Group 1 $21,000 First Security Wanganui Cup over 520m will be decided, while heats for the $13,000 Wanganui Stayers at Group 2 level over the demanding 755m trip have been scheduled.

Both group race finals will be decided on Friday, August 14, with the Wanganui Punter of the Year contest also to be held. The winner of that will walk away with a $2500 prize - plus, obviously, tote winnings.

Check out more details about the punters' competition on the www.wanganuigreyhounds.co.nz website, or give Erin Woods a call on 345 6794 for further information.

Some open-class chasers are warming up for their Wanganui Cup assignments in the Wanganui Security C4/5 (Race 9, 8.14pm) tonight over 520m.

The Lisa Ahern-prepared Smash Allegro stylishly won the corresponding race last week by leading throughout.

He must adopt those same tactics in tonight's event when stepping from trap-six.

Ahern, who heads into the last greyhound meeting for the 2014-15 season with kennel stakes earnings sitting at $1,040,058 for the season, has two other contenders engaged here.

Ritza Danny is a competitive chaser on this track, while the strong-finishing Check The Mail endured a luckless 520m outing here last Friday.

Speaking about strong-finishing greyhounds, take a look at Boston Heart from the Angela Turnwald kennels here.

Boston Heart rocketed home late to nail his July 10 win in the 520m. Expect him to deliver a similar finish here.

The Group 1-winning kennelmate Royal Runner is sitting as the first reserve.

She commands respect if she gains a race start here.

Royal Runner has resumed from a spell when contesting a recent Cambridge Group 2 457m event, where her condition only gave out over the latter stages.

The locally trained Nitro Mary produced a gusty fourth in that Cambridge race.

Her known early pace is an asset she must use for her conditioners Gary Ross and Sarah Voyce.

Interest is added here by the track-debuting northerner Joe Joe from the James Black and Alisha Steele kennels.

Joe Joe was a strong last-start Manukau 527m winner.
