LAST weekend saw a lot of success at regional events from the competitive gymnasts of the Wanganui Boys and Girls Gym Club.

At the Mid Island Gym Sports gymnastics championships in Rotorua, Jonathan Maples finished third overall in the senior men's Level 7 competition.

Maples competed strongly in each of the apparatus finals - winning the vault while coming runner-up on the floor and the rings.

He was also third on both the parallel bars and high bar.

Millie Manning was the only competitor in the women's Step 10 division, thus coming home with five gold medals.

The Wanganui club's junior artistic gymnasts were competing at the same time in the Palmerston North competition and finished with some great results.

The girls Step 2 competition was won by Anna Hughes, who was first on the vault and the bar plus second on the beam.

Shannon Hill was third overall in the same category, coming third on both vault and beam, while Eibhlin Lynch was fifth overall after winning the beam and coming third on vault.

Hughes, Hill, Lynch and Kaitlin Dew made up the Step 2 team and came second overall.

In the Step 4 division, Holly Burrow was fifth overall, having won on beam, while Crista Yum was first on the bar.

The Palmerston North boys Level 2 competition saw Jayden Fergusson finish 3rd overall, having won the rings, come runnerup on the floor and pommel, while third on the parallel bars.

William Warburton was second overall in the boys Level 4 competition, winning both the vault and high bar, then coming third on pommel.

In the same category, Troy Rea was first on floor and Amardin Firaza third on vault.

Also on May 2-3, Jamie O'Hagan competed at the Auckland-Manukau Trampoline Championships and placed third overall in the men's 13-14 years Double Mini competition, while coming fourth in the individual competition.

His scores were high enough to enable him to qualify for the national championships in October. Club head coach Kelly Taylor-Ward said gymnasts were training towards a Kapiti contest at the end of this month.
