The Wanganui Club 7s rugby competition will be resurrected this weekend with all players vying for a spot in a representative side to be selected after Saturday's play at Marton Park.
Wanganui Rugby Union club liaison officer Paul Kenny said all clubs, with the exception of Border, will field teamsthis weekend during a quickfire fixture billed as a family day out.
"We haven't had a club 7s competition in Wanganui for some years, so this is resurrection day I suppose," Kenny said yesterday.
"We have some wonderful players suited to 7s rugby out there and this will be a chance for them to make the rep side and gain exposure at a higher level.
"The day at Marton Park starts at 10am and play continues through to the final at 1.10pm after which the rep side will be named."
Teams from Marist, Pirates, Ruapehu, Taihape, Utiku Old Boys, Ratana, Marton and Kaierau will be split into two pools to find two finalists.
Taihape first five-eighth and former Wanganui Heartland player Tom Wells has been appointed the Wanganui 7s rep coach and is also one of the selectors on Saturday.
Once named the rep side will train for the Hurricanes Regional 7s tournament being held in Palmerston North on December 6, with hopes of qualifying for the national competition later in the summer.
