Then City were excellent when they won the second cleanly 3-0. The wins in each game come from the home team, so the Sox may have the advantage this afternoon.
In fairness, City has improved undoubtedly since the first match and are seen by many of those in the top half of the league as the side that can cost any team in with a shot.
And player coach James Oxtoby will be hoping the recent upturn in form continues today as the side head into their bye round next weekend.
At Wembley Park, centre stage will be another side on a recent and decent run of form in the Western Premiership, when Wanganui Athletic 1sts host North End Reserves in the main fixture at 2.30pm.
Athletic will have a spring in their step after a convincing 4-1 win last time out against PN Marist Reserves; plenty of kudos for their fortitude goes to coaching staff Mike Cronin and Memo Musa.
A turnaround in the second half of the season has seen the young side find their feet at this level.
Wanganui City Reserves return home as well after falling last weekend on the road. A lack of consistency of late is having an effect on their returns on the points tables.
While looking reasonable at home, which is what they will need against Redsox A's at 12.30pm, the travel looks to be the Achilles heel for the side recently.
Barring one Federation Cup win on the road, points away from Wembley Park have been barren and may well have already cost the side any chance of seriously pressing for the title.
The Manawatu Women's league is now split into its divisions of four.
A new-look league consisting of Wanganui Athletic Women, PN Marist Women's 1sts, Massey Women's Reserves and North End Women's 1sts promises some class football which will test the local ladies. Wanganui open their two-round competition at home on Sunday at 1.30pm against Marist in what looks to be the cracker of the round.
After finishing level on points in their qualifying round, which was affected by weather postponements, the glaring difference between the two is in the goal-scoring tallies.
Marist scoring a massive 19 goals less than Athletic's 118 would indicate that the hosts are sharp in the attacking third and the visitors have a lot of work to do to challenge the locals in that area.
Then the defensive area also indicates that Athletic have been secure and by far the best in the league although Marist do fill the runner-up spot and may themselves prove a tough nut to crack.
