THE battle for fourth begins today at Wembley Park for Evolution Painting & Decorating Wanganui City against Havelock North in the Lotto Federation League at 2.30pm.

Meanwhile, Devon Homes Wanganui Athletic will need to pull their socks up and bounce back from last weekend's surprise defeat, as they host the Hokowhitu Rangers at 12.30pm.

Both the Wanganui City Reserves and Renovators are away to Palmerston North today, with the Reserves at Linton, and the Renovators facing the Red Sox Manawatu As at Skoglund Park.

Wanganui City are up against the unknown today with Havelock North coming to town in the first of the club's four catch-up matches.

Last weekend's victory over Feilding would have given City a much-needed boost going into these matches, but if they are to work their way into the top four before the competition splits, they will need to ensure they take every opportunity presented to them.

Havelock sit third on the table, nine points clear of the fourth-placed Boys High, so will not be a team to take lightly.

I'm picking this to swing the way of City, with their home ground advantage paying dividends for them.

Athletic will have spent a couple of days licking their wounds after falling to their rivals over the back fence in the latest local derby, but are not a team to wallow in a loss for too long.

Hosting the current league leaders on Wembley today will be the perfect opportunity for them to show the doubters their campaign has not fallen off the rails.

But it will be down to the squad as a whole to go out and play 90 minutes of intensive football, and ensure their back line is up for the task of stemming an onslaught of attack from Hokowhitu.

The visitors have been rampant in their goal-scoring this season, amassing 54 goals during their campaign and yet only conceding 16 along the way.

While these sorts of statistics may worry many opponents, the Reds have recently been showing their own prowess in front of goal, and have certainly found some consistency in their backline which should give the coaching staff some confidence in putting out a competitive showing today.

This should be a close match, so I'm picking there to be plenty of goals today, but will ultimately end in a draw.

The City Reserves will definitely have their tails up after downing Athletic last weekend, and will probably relish the underdog label again as they face off against the Linton 1sts at the army base today.

It may be a different prospect for them though, with the desire of the local derby missing from this match, yet still having plenty on the line.

Last time the two teams met, the game degraded quickly into more of a melee than a football match, so it will be important for the Reserves to keep their composure and focus on the task at hand if they're to be successful.

Boasting a squad with plenty of experience should ensure the Reserves can call on their veteran players to lead by example and keep things composed, as Linton have shown while they can stir the pot, they can capitalise on their opposition's failure to focus then steal away victories from when they buckle under the physical pressure.

But the knowledge of being able to play David against the Goliath's of the Western Premiership should give the Reserve's plenty of desire to take the game to Linton today.

This will be tough, and while I'd like to be proven wrong, I'm not sure the Reserves will be able to back up last week's performance today.

I'm picking a valiant effort, but a defeat by a single goal.

Tex von Kwiatowski was pleased with his team's draw last weekend, and will be looking for the same gutsy performance from the City Renovators as they take on the second placed Red Sox Manawatu As at Skoglund Park.

It seems like the Renovators may have put the brakes on what was starting to look like a landslide in form, but today's test will be a true measure of how far the team have come in recent weeks.

The Renovators have shown they know how to battle, and can hold onto a result, but they'll need to work extra hard against Red Sox, a team which is stacked with experienced players who have played top flight national football.

But with Red Sox having dropped their last two matches and the Renovators showing some good recent form, this match could well swing the way of the visitors, so I'm picking this to go in the favour of the young side, by at least two goals.
