As usual, the pace was on from the outset. Goode was keen to assert himself early as he and Gosney spent the majority of lap one off the front of the main bunch.
However, unable to attract sufficient reinforcements to try a serious breakaway, they soon returned to the fold. Over the next couple of laps Goode continued to try his luck but there were few takers and the bunch circulated without drama until late on lap three.
At that stage on the Blueskin Rd leg of the course Phil Groves, who was near the front, clipped an opponent's wheel and hit the deck.
Surprisingly, the rest of the field avoided him but the incident did cause a split towards the back of the bunch and several riders lost contact.
With the pace still strong up front, those chasing were unable to rejoin the lead group.
Sean Tucker and Rob Gemmell with Zeb Walker in tow made a valiant attempt to do so just falling short on the final lap.
Although he was unable to continue the race, Groves fortunately escaped serious injury.
After the crash, fourteen riders remained in the front group and while the sporadic attacks continued, the bunch always had them well covered.
On lap seven, the acid went on heading up Blueskin Rd before the final turn onto Station Rd.
Nine riders, including the main contenders, had establisheda 10-second gap as they turned into the finishing straight.
In the charge to the line it was the more seasoned Cheatley who got his wheel across first after a stirring battle with Bismark, who fought right to the finish.
Jason Sturzaker was right on their hammer in third place and only just ahead of Goode.
Fifth place went to Steve Cowan who is always thereabouts in a sprint finish with the youthful Lewis Bunker turning in a handy effort for sixth.
Gosney, Boaz Darby and Adrian Pettit, finishing in that order, made up the remainder of the lead bunch.
Further back in the field, a slimmed down Zeb Walker was the first B-grader home, taking honours in that division by a margin from Craig Bright, Laurika Hazlehurst and Laurence Sunde.
In the four-lap, 24km C-grade race, the dedicated Dean Blackwell added to his growing record in this grade with a clear cut win over veteran Jim Callaghan, who battled on well for his second placing.
The young Damien Hussey, who has had very little experience, again showed his potential with a good ride for third place.
Peter Chapman and Julie Weir were fourth and fifth respectively.
