The stars of the Wellington Phoenix won't be in town for a long time but they will make it a good time for Wanganui Intermediate students on Friday morning.
The A-League side is travelling up to New Plymouth to play New Zealand A in a pre-season match on Sunday.
KylieMacKenzie, Central Football's Wanganui operations manager, said it has been arranged for the team to stop for a 45-minute visit to Wanganui Intermediate this Friday, where they will receive a powhiri and have a run-around with the students.
The players will also sign autographs and souvenirs.
The news was welcomed by strong local Phoenix supporter Colin Fulton, who attends every home game at Westpac Stadium during the season. "It ends up costing me a packet."
Fulton had been in contact with the Phoenix organisation over the past few weeks, hoping to convince them to make a visit somewhere in town on their way to Taranaki.
"The more they stop in places like Wanganui, the more they get engaged with people, who will come to their games."
Fulton hoped the Phoenix may give strong consideration to playing a preseason game in Wanganui in the future.
