It was a eye opener for the Central West Men's team in the new-look Conference Cup, being beaten 9-2 by Dalefield Club Men on the Collegiate hockey turf yesterday.
Central West is made up of players from the Taranaki, Whanganui, Rangitikei and Horowhenua associations, including Whanganui's Lee Moir and JosephRedpath, as well as Rangitikei's Angus Griffin.
They would start well and also score the final goal of the game, but in between the Dalefield side had an edge with their passing and execution in front of goal, being just a step ahead of the 'home' side.
The Conference Cup is an initiative amongst the Central, Midlands and Capital Hockey regions, consisting of seven men's teams and three women's squads playing a round-robin format through to July 23.
