It was a very busy month for the Wanganui East Club petanque exponents.
The National Triple Championships were held on March 5-6 and club members Christine Strichen and Sharon Cannon combined with Masterton's Claire Wilson to come in third place.
"Pieman" Pete Hamilton was in the team that finished fifth.
Last Saturday, the Jacques Cochonnet Challenge Trophy was played against hosts Kapiti by Wanganui East's team of Dene Futcher, Yvonne Futcher, Richard Turfrey, Sue Gurr, Ken Heywood and Tony Simpson, which they lost 5-4 after a series of close games.
Club spokeswoman Pauline Ray said many members have attended two melees - one in Otaki and the second in Palmerston North. "The second melee was stopped after three games due to continuous rain and flooded terrains."
The big challenge was the transtasman clash in Alexandra, where five club members represented New Zealand.
"They were successful in winning both the open and senior challenges," said Ray. "It was the first time Lewis Gill and Sheryl Parslow had represented their country so it had a special significance.
"Unfortunately Sheryl broke her ankle on the way home so will have to be content being on the sideline for a few weeks. We wish her a fast recovery."
