Bowls day cashes in

Aramoho Bowling Club was able to raise $1520 for Birthright Whanganui from its annual Wanganui Car Centre Celebrity Bowls Day at the green on Sunday.

Invited guests are drawn into teams of three and then joined by a regular bowler, to compete in four games. They then can give donations which go to Aramoho's chosen children's charity for that tournament.

In addition, donated items from Guthrie Bowron and Carolines were auctioned at lunchtime.

"A special thanks to our appointed ambassador Vallie Finlay who again raised funds prior to the event and inviting people to attend," said spokesman Mike Morgan.

"On behalf of the Aramoho Strategic Committee, we thank the club members and wives - who prepared the great lunch - and all those who attended and donated, including those who could not attend."

Birthright works with one-parent families in Whanganui to build confidence, skills and resilience for both parent and children.

Meanwhile, the Wanganui Academy men's and women's teams were not that successful in their invitational tournament at the Johnson Park Bowling Club, in Feilding on Saturday.

Morgan said teams from Kapiti Coast and Wairarapa couldn't attend, so Whanganui just played Manawatu three times.

"While our teams did not win many games it was an opportunity to try out different players in different positions and we can report that in this respect it was a real success. We feel confident ... the teams to represent Whanganui at the Intercentre tournament are the best players available."

That Under-8s tournament will be held in April.
