Borrowed clubs give club capt the ace

You're only as good as your last golf shot, so Castlecliff Golf Club captain Grant Clark was bemused when he brought his average right down during a bad round of golf with a hole-in-one on Saturday.

Using a set of clubs borrowed from clubmate John Endersby because his wife had taken the car to Palmerston North, Clark refocused after a bad start to his round to make an ace on the short par 3 4th hole.

"It was probably my worst round of golf in ages. So a mixed bag," Clark said yesterday.

"The second hole I hit an eight, lost ball, then a seven ... and then a one."

It is the veteran's second ace at Castlecliff, the previous being in 1999, along with another back in the day at the Belmont Links of Wanganui Golf Club.

Endersby could only shake his head - he has had those clubs for 25 years without an ace, and within an hour Clark had made the magic swing.

"A seven iron, and it was quite good because I got a really tough time when I got in [to the clubrooms]," Clark said.

"It certainly cost me, it's cost me all weekend. They don't come around very often."

Standard practice at Castlecliff is to get the ball mounted, while Clark's name will go on to the honours board. It is the fourth hole-in-one in the greater Wanganui region this year and the second on the Castlecliff course.
