Devon Homes Wanganui Athletic failed to impress yet again with a disastrous 4-0 loss to Red Sox Manawatu at Wembley in the Lotto Federation League on Saturday.

Meanwhile in the Western Premiership, the Athletic Reserves put up a limp attempt against Massey Celtic and were thumped 7-1 in the process.

After last weekend's solid effort to claim a draw away at Gisborne, hopes and expectations were high for the Athletic firsts to put out a strong showing in front of their home fans as they hosted Red Sox for the two team's first encounter on Saturday.

But those hopes and expectations were quickly shattered as Red Sox took apart the home side, who appeared to not even be ready to play, let alone make a push for a landmark victory in their poor season.

While the efforts of a handful of the Athletic players were exemplarily, there appeared to be a hefty lack of desire from many of the others taking the field. That lacklustre approach to the game proved to be costly.

It was clear that Red Sox wanted the win more than the Reds, and took every opportunity to keep the screws tightly twisted on Athletic, often forcing them to defend for long periods of time.

The Reds were not completely outclassed however, and had their own opportunities to claim a goal during the fixture, but we unable to convert those chances into a mark on the scoresheet.

After the final whistle sounded, the players and supporters of Wanganui Athletic were clearly deflated, while also frustrated at the meagre display of football put on show.
Plenty were asking questions as to what can be done to turn around the fortunes of the club's failing premier football season.

The news for those in Athletic's clubroom didn't get any better as the scoreline between their Reserves and Massey Celtic filtered back from Palmerston North.

It seems the Reserves are still struggling to settle into a routine and find the consistency of a style of football that suits them, and the lack of any real leadership within the team still seems to be a problem the club can't find an answer for.

Bottom of the table Massey Celtic should have been a good chance for the Reserves to earn themselves another season victory, but the home side were not ready to roll over and give the visitors an easy time.

Jordan Candish saved the day for the Reserves, preventing them from making the journey home with a goalless defeat, but with six of the opposition players sharing in their seven goals, Massey utilised their entire squad to pile the misery onto the Reserves and send them home with their tail between their legs.

With plenty of season left for the Reserves, there's still time for some redemption to occur, however they'll quickly need to find the answers to the outstanding questions that still linger, and implement the changes required to effect their performances soon.
