Young politician Chloe Swarbrick is visiting Whanganui next weekend as part of her commitment to encouraging youth engagement in voting.
The third-place runner in the recent Auckland mayoralty and candidate on the Green Party list, 22-year-old Ms Swarbrick has a law degree and runs an Auckland café with her partner and
a friend.
"I'm excited to be visiting Whanganui and meeting people interested in politics, the Greens and getting young people engaged in voting," Ms Swarbrick said.
The Greens' candidate for Whanganui, Nicola Patrick, organised the visit.
"It's great to have Chloe in town to share insights into her journey into politics. She's an inspirational young woman," said Ms Patrick.
Ms Patrick said Chloe would be speaking at Article café at 9.30am on Saturday, April 8, then would visit the River Trader's Market from 10.30am to 11.30am, before she had to return to Palmerston North for an event later that day.
Article café owner Jack Mitchell-Anyon was pleased to host her visit.
"Chloe also runs a café and art gallery in Auckland so I'm looking forward to hearing about that side of her life as well as her experience of becoming the voice of young people in politics," Mr Mitchell-Anyon said.
Ms Patrick said one of the drivers for the visit was to help reach young people who were over-represented in groups who did not vote.
"We hope to get the message out that every vote makes a difference - and that not voting tends to benefit the conservative, established parties. If you don't vote, you're basically giving more weight to conservative voters," Ms Patrick said.
