Young artists get creative in holiday programme

Young artists at Sarjeant on the Quay were making faces this week as they created their self-portraits for a school holiday programme workshop.

The portraits had a wild and wacky twist to them as a fold in the paper hid a scary or humorous surprise underneath.

Toni Adams, 11, had not started work on her surprise but said she was planning to draw some leaping sheep to count.

"I'm not tired now but I do like to sleep," she said.

Quantum Twist, 6, had drawn a bear on fire underneath the flap on his self-portrait.

"That is the smoke coming out of the bear and I will make it blue," said Quantum.

Sarjeant educator Andrea Gardner said the participants would make fancy frames for their portraits if time allowed.

The workshop followed on from a mask-making workshop and next week there will be more school holiday activities with screen printing workshops on Wednesday and Thursday.

"Participants will be able to design and print their own reusable cotton tote bags," said Ms Gardner.

All ages are welcome at the workshops which cost $10 per session for each student and bookings are essential. Spaces are limited. For bookings phone 06 349 0506.
