Wrecked signs will not deter traders from Sunday market

Castlecliff Market convener thinks the destruction of signs was pointless vandalism.

When Castlecliff Market co-ordinator Clive Ward arrived to find the market's wooden signs trashed and vandalised he could have been forgiven for wanting to throw in the towell.

The market, which began back in 2015, has struggled a bit over recent months with bad weather in particular keeping stallholders and the public away.

So when Sunday dawned fine Mr Ward was upbeat about the day's prospects and was not expecting to be dealt another blow.

The sight that greeted him at the Heads Rd site was dismal.

"Most of our signs were missing and just one badly bent one was lying on the ground," Mr Ward said.

"We found the others broken and lying in the shrubbery," he said.

Mr Ward said the plywood signs were usually either screwed to the fence or fastened to the ground with iron rings.

"They were probably nearing the end of their lives but I volunteer my hours to the market and wasn't planning on having to make new ones just yet."

The market started at the Castlecliff Domain in 2015 and later moved to the current location opposite the Foursquare supermarket.

Mr Ward recently purchased a food cart for the market.

"Rather than moan about the lack of one, I decided to purchase it myself," he said.

He said the site has room for more stalls and he encouraged community groups, individuals and schools to join the every-Sunday market.

"It is just $5 for a stall or free for charity groups to sell your wares or promote yourselves.
"If you are thinking about having a garage sale or a school fair - come and join us and have it here where there is plenty of company and traffic going by."

There's no word yet on who vandalised the market's signs.
