WHITEBAIT: Part of the Kiwi lifestyle. PICTURE / GETTY IMAGES

Over the last week the whitebait have been caught in numbers further up the river, but they are still catching a few in the usual places. However, over the last week we have learnt that there is no whitebait in the Tongariro crater lake. The ones that were schooled up outside the river mouth have slowly been forced up the river by the hungry kahawai. So again you can double dose and indulge in the riches of the ocean from whitebait fritters to smoked kahawai or you can catch a kahawai and enjoy eating two fish species at once!
Water temperature is warm, from experience of a few falls into the river lately. Might be why we not catching too many ourselves ...
With three weeks remaining in the season, there is plenty of whitebait to be caught. Hopefully you have all checked your nets and located any little holes through which the pesky little things can escape and cost you a fritter. Set nets still seem to be the way to go - set and forget and have a nice cold beverage or a feed . If you're travelling away for the last of the season, remember to be safe and take care around the water.
