A surprise donation gave Wanganui Riding for the Disabled's successful car boot sale fundraiser an extra boost.

Volunteer Chris McLeod said the car boot sale raised about $1000 "and a woman came in and gave us a cheque for $2000".

The car boot sale was held at the Wanganui RDA premises in Purnell St on Saturday. The event featured pony rides, a cake stall, a sausage sizzle and goods for sale from car boots, trailers and utes.

Wanganui RDA is raising funds to buy the almost 2ha of land it leases from the NZ Transport Agency and Whanganui District Council. So far the organisation has raised $100,000 of the $750,000 needed.
