Whanganui can expect a mostly stable week leading into Waitangi Day but a weather system causes an unstable forecast for the weekend.
MetService meteorologist Alec Holden said up until Waitangi Day on Thursday “there is a high-pressure system that’s keeping a cap on things”.
The “cap” extended through the past few days, meaning conditions should remain similar to last weekend.
The “fairly settled” conditions for most of the week include dry and warm weather with a high of 25C and a low of 12C, along with some high cloud and westerly winds.
“Nothing really changes between now and the public holiday,” Holden said.
A frontal system would move up the South Island through Waitangi Day. It was not expected to directly hit Whanganui but would bring some unstable conditions.
“Things do start becoming a little more changeable after Waitangi Day,” Holden said.
Conditions were forecast to be warmer and wetter conditions, with showers from Friday afternoon and through the weekend with a high of 26C and a low of 15C.
