Whanganui residents can expect a mainly fine and dry weekend following last weekend's wild weather.

Metservice meteorologist Lewis Ferris said it looked to be a pretty good weekend ahead.

It starts off beautifully on Friday, with fine weather and a high of 26C.

"Even on Saturday, we are still talking about fine with a few clouds and northwesterly winds. Northwesterlies for Whanganui is usually a pretty good wind direction in terms of not being too cool or too strong."

Saturday has an expected temperature of 25C.

It's not until Sunday that locals can expect a few showers.

"At the moment, we're saying morning rain with a southwest change then becoming fine," Ferris said.

"It looks like the rain will pass through the first half of Sunday, and by the time we get to the afternoon there is a good chance it is dry.

"Compared to the weather event of last weekend, this will be a walk in the park. We aren't talking anything big."
