The Whanganui Summer Programme's tour of central city trees started in Pakaitore/Moutoa Gardens.
A walking tour of central Whanganui's notable and protected trees drew an enthusiastic crowd of more than 30 people.
Led by botanist Colin Ogle, Sunday's tour in glorious sunshine was part of the Whanganui Summer Programme.
The group visited Pakaitore/Moutoa Gardens where there are nine trees listed in the WhanganuiDistrict Plan, including two English oaks and two pohutukawa, plus a sky-duster palm, Moreton Bay fig, karaka, kauri and totara.
A short walk took to the group to Queens Park where they viewed the listed Monterey cypress (macrocarpa), Spanish fir, Aleppo pine, totara and Mediterranean cypress. Listed groups of trees at Queens Park include mixed English and Turkey oaks, phoenix palms, pohutukawa and silky oak.
"Both areas have many other trees of interest, some of them as old as the listed trees, others quite recent plantings," Mr Ogle said.
