Lake protection?
A Horowhenua iwi group says Horizons Regional Council is not doing enough to protect Lake Horowhenua and Hokio Stream, Radio New Zealand reports. It has asked Environment Minister David Parker to appoint an independent commissioner to the council.
That possibility was also raised in a meeting last month. The
meeting was attended by Parker and by representatives of Horizons and of the two groups that won a case against Horizons in the Environment Court last year - Fish & Game and the Environmental Defence Society.

Best regional final
The Taranaki/Manawatū Regional Final of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year contest, held in Wellington in February, has been judged the best regional final of seven held this year.
It was the first time a regional final has been held in Wellington and the aim was to showcase modern agriculture to a city audience.

Pecuniary advantage
Margaret Elvina Tiraha Tui-Ihaia was convicted on two charges of using a card for pecuniary advantage in Whanganui District Court on Tuesday. Tui-Ihaia will be sentenced on October 25. She faces one other charge of receiving property and will reappear on August 7.

Hickey guilty
A man pleaded guilty to unlawfully carrying or possessing a firearm, failing to comply with reporting obligations and possessing utensils for cannabis. Frank Rangiahau Hickey was convicted on all charges and will appear on October 25 for sentencing.
