Lake fall victim The man who died after falling into Crater Lake on Mt Ruapehu on Saturday was 32-year-old Magesh Jagadeesan from Lower Hutt. His death has been referred to the Coroner, and iwi have placed a rāhui around the area. Climbers, trampers and skiers are asked not to go abovethe boundaries of the ski areas at Whakapapa, Tūroa and Tukino, or above a line 2300m above sea level on the mountain.
Raft of charges Jessy Anthony Henare Atkinson appeared in Whanganui District Court yesterday on eight charges of accessing a computer system for dishonest purposes and a range of other charges. He will appear again on December 19.
Clocks go forward Daylight saving starts this weekend. People will be putting their clocks an hour forward overnight on Sunday, from 2am to 3am.
Info on diseases The Whanganui Science Forum talk tonight is about ebola and other infectious diseases. The speaker is David Hayman, from Massey University. The talk starts at 7.30pm in Whanganui's Davis Lecture Theatre. It will cost $4 for forum members, and $5 for others.
Wave astronomy The Astronomical Society's Beatrice Hill Tinsley Lecture in Whanganui is on October 7, at 7pm in the Whanganui Hospital Lecture Theatre. Dr Paul Groot, from The Netherlands, will talk about gravitational wave astronomy. Patrons should go to the hospital main entrance and follow the signs. The cost is $5.
By-election votes Just over 27 per cent of eligible voters voted in a by-election for a Palmerston North representative on Horizons Regional Council. There were five candidates. Jono Naylor got 5182 votes, Chris Teo-Sherrell 4924 votes and Jack Dowds 4337 votes. The remaining candidates each got less than 1000. The new councillor will be sworn in on October 9, and replaces the late Pat Kelly.
