Elevator closed
The Durie Hill elevator will be closed for several days for repairs. The Whanganui District Council said in a recent inspection it was recommended some of the scheduled maintenance tasks should be carried out sooner rather than later.

Daffodil Car Rally
The Wanganui Vintage Car Club's annual Daffodil Car Rally
for Cancer is on Sunday, August 26. Vehicles will meet at the club's rooms in Patapu St, Whanganui East, at 12.45pm and leave on the rally by 1.15pm.

Fire caught early
An alert neighbour probably prevented a house fire in Nixon St after a pot on a stove caught fire about 11am on Tuesday. Station officer Bryan Coskerie said the neighbour heard a smoke alarm and called Fire and Emergency. The fire was caught early and only resulted in some smoke throughout the house.

Not guilty plea
Joseph Edwin Cotter pleaded not guilty to 10 charges in Whanganui District Court on Tuesday. They include charges for driving disqualified, unlawfully taking motor vehicles, breaching release conditions, failing or refusing to provide ID to police, wilful damage, other kidnapping and male assaults female. Cotter will next appear in the court on October 23.

Assault plea
A Whanganui man has pleaded guilty to contravening a protection order and male assaults female in Whanganui District Court. Shaquille Rawiri Reweti will appear in court on November 7 for sentencing.

Sentencing
Texas Evan Cuff will be sentenced in Whanganui District Court on November 7 having pleaded guilty to charges, including shoplifting, theft, entering an enclosed property without reasonable excuse, procuring or possessing a cannabis plant, procuring or possessing methamphetamine, possessing or using utensils for methamphetamine and receiving property.
