A "divided family" were at Whanganui District Court when a brother pleaded guilty to assaulting his sister.

Jarrod Rastrick, 23, admitted to assaulting his sister, breaching a protection order and damaging the walls of his mother's house on November 24 in 2017.

Rastrick's mother said her daughter "has nightmares" about the incident, as she consoled her at the court-room entrance.

Rastrick's sister said that after the incident "my panic attacks have gotten much worse, even being here is crossing the line for me".

Judge John Macdonald said he knew little about the family background, but he hoped there would be no repeat offending.
