Victoria Ave revamp

I may be going off the handle here, but in reference to the cancelled lower Victoria Ave revamp; this is indicative of the short-term thinking behind the business community that has been evident over many decades.

Examples?

We could have had a university here but instead it went to Massey.

The Splash Centre could have been an Olympic-sized pool.

The velodrome should have been fully completed.

In my opinion, the business community baulked at these due to self-interest.

They turn down a $2 return in the future for a $1 return today.

And they turned down a people-friendly environment for vehicles that pollute the area.

Water proposal doesn't add up

We have heard a lot about this Government's proposal to take over all water supply and maintenance services in the country but nothing about the funding and how it is to be paid for.

As a ratepayer I see this set-up working as follows.

The charges I currently pay for water supply and wastewater disposal in my rates will be transferred to the new authority which should reduce my rates bill.

However, the new authority will send me a bill annually, like Horizons, for my water services plus an average charge of every other councils' water cost in the authority's region.

In other words, local house owners will be subsidising other councils, making our water, water disposal and maintenance charges more expensive than ever.

This will increase rents, add to poverty and be more costly for those on fixed incomes in Whanganui.

Our council should opt out of this new proposal in spite of the Government's $24 million dollar bribe to accept it.

Sayonara to the Olympics

It feels sad as the Olympics come to an end.

Thank you to the magic of television for bringing it to my lounge.

Congratulations New Zealand and I will say from all Kiwis to all competitors: we are so very proud of you.
