That Lorina Winsor was verbally abused (Chronicle, March 10) for wearing a mask in a public place is unacceptable here in this city or anywhere else.

In case it has escaped the attention of self-appointed, overzealous fashion police, this pandemic is far from over.

Ms Winsor is to be commended for taking responsibility for her own health and safety as well as for those with whom she may come in contact.

I hope she will not see this behavior of those who objected to her mask as anything but fringe opinion and not allow this episode to effect her remaining among us. As a physician, I stand with and commend Ms Winsor's sensible and thoughtful behaviour.

Excellent health service

Our family has built up some frequent flyer miles at Whanganui Hospital in the past six months and I'm writing to acknowledge the great service we've had from WAM, A&E and follow-up appointments and with our GP.

Through a series of unlucky and unrelated incidents, both my children, Mitchell and Riley, have received calm, caring and professional service.

Thank you to the staff and all the best through the change processes under way. I hope the intended improvements are designed and delivered in a way that mean health inequities turn a corner so all New Zealanders can access the fabulous service we've got used to.

Cost of socialism

Our mayor wants a policeman on our river, paid for by the ratepayers, I guess to tell off those he thinks are having too much fun (Mayor urges awa rule, News, May 17).

This is socialism; you don't have to look after yourself, we will look after you.

Leave it to the police, if something goes wrong they can investigate, and the ratepayers won't have to pick up the costs.

He also wants Horizons to change their carbon/CO2 goal to 2025 in line with the Government's goal.

If we get rid of this plant food, CO2, how are we going to feed the people? No CO2 no growth, a brown planet, but at least they can't touch our main source of CO2 - our volcanoes, on land and under the sea, so we are relatively safe from extinction, just we will be riding bikes and living in tents because their tactics will have sent us broke.

China is building coal-fired power stations flat out so they will be able to supply our needs.
