The Waverley Anzac Day service continued with the tradition of being well-attended by people of all ages on Thursday.

A prayer was read by pastor Ted Reeves at the ceremony, followed by a talk by Ret. Major Pat Scaife, who focused on the history of women in the forces.

The talk covered the initial dismissal of women in wartime efforts, up until the time leaders could no longer shrug off the contribution women could make in the country's armed services.

Pupils from the area's schools donned their uniforms and took part in the march before laying wreaths at the cenotaph.

Waverley - Waitotara RSA president Brian Rook was unable to be there as he was attending Anzac services in Turkey.

Organiser Pauline Costello said the RSA was grateful for the assistance of businesses and the volunteer fire brigade in holding the service.
