Bowls NZ president Jeanette Sinclair congratulates Dianne Patterson, Lesley Bourke and Karen Hunt after their NZ Club Triples victory in North Harbour on Tuesday.

Bowls NZ president Jeanette Sinclair congratulates Dianne Patterson, Lesley Bourke and Karen Hunt after their NZ Club Triples victory in North Harbour on Tuesday.

It was a Tuesday afternoon for celebrating on the North Shore as Whanganui's Dianne Patterson, Lesley Bourke and Karen Hunt won the Bowls NZ Club Championship National triples finals at the Brown's Bay Bowling Club.

Representing Wanganui BC, the Patterson skipped-team won the six team round robin competition against the qualifiers from the other centres, over two days and five rounds of games at the North Harbour-based club.

Coming into the second day on Tuesday, the Wakefield team of Margaret Eames, Linda Sisterston and Dianne Holland were able to pick up a win, as did Wanganui, meaning their final round matchup would decide the title as they had both lost once and won three at this point.

Wanganui had beat the Queenstown team 28-15 in that fourth round, while the Tauranga South team upset the Carlton Cornwall (Auckland) trio to remove them from title contention.

Patterson, Bourke and Hunt had a strong finish to the matchup to see them edge out as winners 14-9, leaving the Wakefield team as runner-up, ahead of the Queenstown team on points differential.

Carlton Cornwall finished fourth while Tauranga South were fifth and Johnston Park (Manawatu) brought up the rear.

It was a fine comeback by Patterson's team, who had lost their opening matchup with Carlton Cornwall 29-11, but rebounded with Day 1 wins over Johnston Park (22-11) and Tauranga South (21-17) to give themselves an outside chance on Day 2 if other results went their way.

Bowls Wanganui Inc is holding their 2017-18 Closing Day tournament for the Peter Belliss Cup tomorrow, starting at 9am at the Laird Park Bowling Club.

This will be followed at 5.30pm by the Bowls Wanganui season's prizegiving.
