Waitangi Day at Pakaitore/Moutoa Gardens in Whanganui.

A chilled vibe was the order of the day at the Waitangi Day commemorations at Whanganui's Pakaitore/Moutoa Gardens.

The event was organised by the Whakawhanake group, with members Kiri Wilson, Daniel Solomon, Tamahaia Skinner, Rongomaitawhiri Ah Ching and Hawea Meihana.

Ms Wilson said people came and went throughout the day. She estimated more than 500 people had attended.

"We had lots of different stalls, information tents and food tents. Awa Sport ran some sports games with families and children who were here and we had a couple of people who were open to having conversations around the Treaty of Waitangi."

The crowd relaxed on the grass and soaked up the sun or took shelter under the trees as they enjoyed the entertainment on the stage.

The Pasifika and Indonesian food stalls were popular with Silo Naqasima saying the Pasifika stall sold out early on after queues of customers lined up.

"Our Pasifika group is here to engage with the community," Mrs Naqasima said. "It doesn't matter what culture you belong to stand tall and be proud."

A hair braiding stall also did a roaring trade and children had fun in a separate area which included a bouncy castle.
