Corrections launches review after prisoners escape cells in escort van

Corrections will be undertaking a “full review” after two prisoners were able to escape their cells in an escort van transporting them to Whanganui Prison.

About 4.40pm today, three prisoners were being transported to the Corrections facility when two escaped from their individual cells.

Neil Beales, deputy commissioner men’s prisons, said all had remained inside the van for the duration of the journey.

He said the incident had not been a threat to public safety and the three men were now in custody at Whanganui Prison.

He confirmed a “full review” of the prisoners’ escape is due to be carried out.

“This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated and the prisoners involved will be held to account for their actions,” he said.

“We would like to acknowledge our colleagues at Police who accompanied Corrections staff to ensure the van could arrive at Whanganui Prison without incident.”
