The future of Subway's Taihape and Waiouru stores is under threat after their franchise-holders were put into liquidation because of unpaid tax.
It was reported this week that in the High Court in Palmerston North, Associate Judge David Gendall said Subway Taihape and Subway Waiouru consented to the Inland Revenue Department's
request to wind up the companies.
The Taihape store, which opened in 2008, is believed to have seven employees.
Ten staff work at the Waiouru store, which was incorporated in 2003. The stores are owned by Waiouru couple Gavin and Renee Powell, but they have refused comment on the court action.
The IRD is pursuing the Waiouru store for $130,307.53, allegedly mostly from unpaid GST and PAYE. The sum being sought from Taihape is $110,523.05, again allegedly mostly unpaid GST and PAYE.
The manager of the Taihape store had no comment to make this week, also declining to say whether they were still trading.
But a spokesperson for Subway headquarters in Auckland said both stores were operating and that the company was consulting with stakeholders.
