Firefighters called to an accident in central Whanganui on Saturday afternoon did not need to cut anyone out of an overturned car.

The driver was already out when they arrived, Station Officer Jes Sorensen said.

The car was upside down at the intersection of Ingestre and Harrison Sts at around 2pm. It may have been hit side on by the van, Sorensen said.

"That's generally how they end up on their roof."

A police spokesman said a vehicle had failed to give way, and no one was hurt in the collision.
