The Whanganui law firm owned by the late Graham Takarangi has been taken over by Treadwell Gordon.

Mr Takarangi, who was principal of Graham Takarangi & Co, died on March 12.

Treadwell Gordon, whose head office is in Whanganui, has been working with the administrators of Mr Takarangi's estate and completed the acquisition of Graham Takarangi & Co on Wednesday, April 4.

Richard Austin, a partner in Treadwell Gordon who worked with Mr Takarangi over many years, said Mr Takarangi's commitment to the field of law and to his clients was "remarkable".

"He has helped many in the community through his law expertise, including acting as a senior counsel for children in the Family Court," Mr Austin said.

"It is a privilege to purchase and manage Graham's Whanganui practice and we're strongly committed to ensuring that the quality of his legal services will endure.

"All files and deeds of Graham Takarangi & Co's Whanganui practice will be transferred to our Treadwell Gordon head office and we will complete work at fees previously agreed."

Hayley Lewis, Graham Takarangi & Co's Whanganui legal executive, will join the 30-strong Treadwell Gordon team. She will be based in its head office at Wairere House. Ms Lewis worked for Mr Takarangi for about 20 years.

Mr Takarangi studied at Victoria University of Wellington and qualified in 1971. He practised in the Family Court for more than 30 years.

Graham Takarangi & Co was established in 1990 and practised in Whanganui and Palmerston North. The practice specialised in helping clients with family law, trusts, wills and relationship property as well as residential, commercial and farm sales and purchases.

Mr Takarangi regularly appeared in the district court on criminal and civil matters, the Employment Tribunal and court and before the Maori Land Court at all levels.

Treadwell Gordon, established in 1869, is one of the country's longest-standing law firms and has private and business clients across New Zealand. It covers all areas of law, including family, property services, criminal and civil litigation, trusts, wills and estates, employment and more. The firm also has a presence in Taihape, Ohakune and Waverley.
