Transport agency to fix Carlton Ave road sign

A road sign at a Whanganui roundabout has been obscuring drivers' visibility and the New Zealand Transport Agency have confirmed it will be altered.

Gonville resident Ross Fitness said the sign which shows the direction for Palmerston North obscures the view for drivers travelling on Carlton Ave towards London St.

"It is all right for truck drivers and people in big SUVs but drivers in standard sized cars can't see the traffic approaching from Jackson St on their right."

NZTA regional transport manager Ross I'Anson said the signs were first installed in December 2010.

"After getting hit in 2012, the reinstated sign was higher than before.

"The New Zealand Transport Agency will lower the sign within the next two months."

Mr I'Anson said the standard for installation of such signs is 1m from the top of the sign to the ground.

"The reason for this is that most cars have the driver's eyes positioned at approximately 1.15m above the ground and that's what is used to measure the sight distance.

"If the sign is 1m in height from the road most drivers should have visibility over these signs."

NZTA information signs give useful facts like the distance to the next town. They are all rectangular, but come in a range of colours and sizes.
