Phillip Smith stands in the dock at the Auckland District Court - sans toupee.

Phillip Smith stands in the dock at the Auckland District Court - sans toupee.

So much to be gobsmacked over and so few words. It's a columnist's worst nightmare.

Not just gobsmacked either, but outraged.

Where to begin .. the obscene and totally irresponsible spending of taxpayer money on seconded Department of Corrections officers. Doing it tough in their $300+ per night luxury resort. But wait there's more.

Go to WINZ for a food grant and you get a set amount. It's $60 per adult and $30 per child, for a whole 7 days. The same government though is happy to pay the Prison

Officers $100 for food, per day! That's $30 for a hearty breakfast, $20 for lunch, crikey what a comedown, the cheapskates .. and a cool $50 for their din-dins

Perhaps the Department of Corrections wouldn't be so short staffed if they spent their funds more wisely. Less frittered on lavish hotels and food allowances might leave them with enough funding to train a new bunch of recruits.

But that's common sense thinking so I shouldn't really be too surprised that civil servants seem unable to grasp the concept.

There seems to be this undeniable link between being employed by the tax or rate payer and the sudden decadent spending of their money. This sick cultural mindset of "It's not our money, so who the hell gives a damn, let's live a little."

Still, with the Department of Corrections, we have the story of Phillip John Smith suing them for damages and the return of his toupee.

A convicted child molester and escapee complained of feeling belittled, degraded and humiliated. Are you freaking kidding me?

I wrote just a couple of months ago about this very thing. I warned it wouldn't be long before Pedo's used the Bill of Rights and other such legal avenues to make themselves the victims.

And now some namby- pamby, wishy- washy, PC judge has ruled in his favour. Heaven forbid our sex offenders don't feel confident enough to prey on children without the help of a wig.

Let's arm them with whatever they need so they feel good about themselves as they truly belittle, degrade and humiliate any future victims. I'm shocked he didn't award him the damages as well .. it's only tax payer money after all. Perhaps we can treat Smith to some hair implantation procedures prior to his release.

And I wonder how much this little legal battle cost the taxpayer? Enough for another batch of new recruits?

Speaking of which, I have the ideal candidate. As a self- appointed River Whisperer, I stopped by and had a quick chat with our newest resident person.

I shared the above story with them and River found the idea of a resort style holiday rather appealing.

River then asked me if the giant yellow duck had a tenancy agreement because no rent payments had been forthcoming.

I said I'd look into it.

River also wanted to know if someone could help with its social media accounts, specifically Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Gender neutral River then whispered how it was also keen to post a profile on Tinder but was a bit shy. I told them to just go with the flow. We gazed into each other's eyes and said our goodbyes.

Corrections, objections, reflections .. what a week.
