For possibly the first time a Wanganui student has won gold at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Long Course Swimming Championships at the weekend.
Wanganui Collegiate 15-year-old Jazmin Phillips claimed gold in her age group 200-metre breaststroke.
Phillips swam a 2.99-second personal best and held off swimmers from Timaru Girls'High and Dannevirke High School to win the race in 2:59.30.
One hundred secondary schools entered the three-day event with Wanganui Collegiate School the only entry from the River City.
This continues a run of New Zealand Secondary School medals that Phillips has won with Wanganui Collegiate this year. In March she was a member of the sprint triathlon team that won gold at the NZSS Tri champs and she also gained a silver team medal at the NZSS Cross Country champs in June.
