After three decades at Whanganui's Splash Centre, office manager Lynne Lower is calling it a day.

Lower celebrated 30 years of service with the Splash Centre in May this year and is now stepping into retirement.

A lot has changed at the swimming facility since she started as a receptionist in 1991, including a whole new wing of pools and hydroslides.

"When I first started we only had the old side of the centre with the main pool. We used to only have two staff, one behind the counter and one watching the pool.

"Now with all the safety rules, we have five or six poolside and a couple in the office."

Lower has worked under seven managers during her 30 years at Splash, crediting those she has worked alongside with and the customers as to why she has stayed so long.

"I love the customers, especially in the morning. They come in and we just have so much banter.

"I just love dealing with customers and we have a great staff, otherwise I wouldn't have stayed as long. We've had so many good times."

The goal for Lower was to do 30 years at the Splash Centre and 20 years with Sport Whanganui, who took over operations of the facility in 2001.

"They've been fantastic since taking over. They are so helpful and even their staff over there I get along with well."

A competitive swimmer in her early days, Lower has always loved being around the water.

"I am going to miss this place, really will miss it. You can walk in [in] the morning and feel a bit down and once you get in here, that just goes away.

"It has been a bit of a family affair here. My daughter worked here poolside, my daughter-in-law worked here and is now at Sport Whanganui and my granddaughter worked here for a bit."

The plan is to spend the summer travelling around the country in a caravan with her husband before returning to Whanganui for Christmas.

The team at Splash Centre planned to have a farewell lunch for Lower on Friday to celebrate her 30 years at the facility.

"I have really enjoyed it. I will miss it. I'm sure I'll pop my head in sometime."
