Two people have died in a crash on State Highway 1 at Marton.

The crash involving a bus without passengers and a truck was reported about 8.50am on Tuesday, police said. The drivers were the sole occupants of the vehicles.

The road was blocked at the rail overbridge between Wings Line and Calico Line.

Police were providing support to their families.

Police said the Serious Crash Unit had carried out a scene examination and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Team would inspect both vehicles.

“Inquiries to establish the cause of the crash will likely take some time.”

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokeswoman said crews from Bulls, Marton and Whanganui attended the crash and assisted police and ambulance staff.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said one ambulance and one operations manager attended.
