South Makirikiri School has the toughest youngsters in the countryside as the Marton school's competitors proved at the Downs Group Rangitikei Tough Kid Challenge on Friday.

Nearly 800 pupils from the wider Rangitikei region jumped hay bales, slogged through swamps and swept down the water slides at the Ohingaiti Domain for the event.

South Makirikiri placed well in both the individual and team events, especially at Year 3-4 level.

The top three competitors from each category from Year 5-6 onwards will also represent Wanganui at the inaugural Mitre 10 Mega Regional Tough Kid competition on December 12.

Next up will be the town schools for the Wanganui Tough Kid Challenge at Cooks Gardens on October 31.
