Sir Peter Blake Trust young leader award for Rutherford Junior High School student in Whanganui

Proud parents looked on at Rutherford Junior High School last week as Westpac representatives presented their daughter with a Sir Peter Blake Trust young leader award.

A special ceremony was held for Brianna Lindsay, 12, who was nominated by the school as being a student whose leadership stood out.

Her parents, Stuart and Donna Lindsay, were in attendance along with all of her grandparents.

"We're very delighted for her and actually also for the school, it's quite a prestigious award," Stuart said.

"We're familiar with Sir Peter Blake and his exploits, travelling around the world and competing in the America's Cup, then his environmental efforts as well."

In partnership with Westpac, the Sir Peter Blake Trust one award to a year 5 to 8 student in every primary and intermediate school in New Zealand.

The award consisted of a bag, a special pin, a brilliant-looking medal and, of course, a pair of lucky red socks.

Donna said Brianna had worked very hard over the past few years and that it had been wonderful watching her grow.

Since being at the school, Brianna had competed in events like the EPro8 Challenge, the Kids' lit Quiz and Mathex.

"We've been overwhelmed with the support and the atmosphere of the school and the opportunities that have been presented to Brianna since she has been here.

"She has blossomed here; she really has."
