Work is well under way to build seven new two-bedroom state houses in Whanganui's Poynter Place.

The Gonville development is the first addition to Housing New Zealand stock in the Whanganui district in some time.

They are two-bedroomed because that is the size most often needed.

The building is being done by Devon Homes, and overseen by Jennian Homes.

The houses are the first of 20 units that HNZ plans to build in Whanganui by June 2020.
