Karl Zimmerman took a few good drenchingsat the annual St Anne's Whanganui School Gala but it was all for a good cause.

The principal put himself in the dunking machine and bravely endured the buckets of water that landed on his head.

"It wasn't so bad - the day wasn't cold and it was all part of a good fundraising effort."

The annual gala is the school's main fundraising event of the year and Zimmerman said it was a success despite a few showers and the fact that the Festival of Cultures was on in Majestic Square.

"The gala has an established reputation and people mark it on their calendars each year," said Zimmerman.

"The white elephant stall was very successful and we had great sponsorship from Air Chathams, the Flying Fox and other local businesses."

Parents and parishioners volunteered to run stalls and events as well as donating goods and baking for the cake stall.

"We sold what we needed to and the money raised will go towards classroom furniture and equipment."

The school will hold a final family mass for the year on Sunday, November 18 at 9.30am at St Anne's Church.
