Rutherford Junior High school pupils were sent back to kindy on Thursday - but this time as role-models.

Nearly 20 year seven and eight students were welcomed into Gonville Kindergarden to read stories to the kids.

Rutherford principal Diane Henare said she was thrilled to get the pupils out in the community.

"It's all about community and it gives students the confidence to come into an environment where they are rolemodels.

"And it's so good for their reading to have that opportunity to read aloud to kids," Ms Henare said.

Gonville Kindergarten head teacher Katie Fry said it was great to utilise the skills and knowledge in the community.

"Having that literacy focus from the older children sets a great a example for our younger ones," Ms Fry said.

The readings with Gonville Kindergarden will run once a term.
